Camden, New Jersey
Program
A major courthouse annex connected to
the existing US Post Office and
Courthouse was designed to create a
justice complex on an existing site. The
General Services Administration and the
Federal Courts agreed that the courthouse
annex and existing structure were to work
together as a unified complex. This was one
of the many challenges presented and
met by the Becica Associates design
team.
The City's historic district presented
another challenge for the design team.
The relatively large new annex had to
co-exist in a residential scale
neighborhood. In response to this
challenge, the upper floors of the annex
were "set-back" from the lower two floors
so that the Cooper Street elevation
remained consistent with the height and
mass of the neighborhood architecture.
In this way, the design integrates this
prominent courthouse into the historic
district.
